The 1940's pulp hero The Avenger was created by Walter Gibson, creator of The Shadow, and Lester Dent, creator of Doc Savage. The first 24 stories were written by Paul Ernst, under the Street and Smith house name Kenneth Robeson, for The Avenger magazine, with covers by H.W. Scott. Later Avenger stories were written for other Street and Smith magazines after 1942 by Emile C. Tepperman, as Robeson and once, perhaps accidentally, under his own name. The 1970's paperback reprints of the series were so popular that Warner Books signed Ron Goulart to write another eight Avenger novels under the Robeson name. The Avenger is currently under copyright by Conde Nast Publications.
