Set several thousands of years after the fall of global civilization, this series is inhabited by three main characters. Megan Whitlock, created by Shirley Meier, is good with knives, ships, and some magic. Shkai'ra Mek Kermak, by S.M. Stirling, is from a very fierce warrior people. Karen Wehrstein's character, Fourth Chevenga Shae-Arano-e, grows up to be the leader of his country with the foreknowledge that he will die young.

Each character has their own book, but there are several books on which the authors have collaborated.
