This moving novel takes place in Sweden and tells of a child who was abducted from a train.

The mother got off the train to make a phone call and is left behind when the conductor calls everyone back to the train. When the train arrives at the final station, the child is missing.

At first the police thought that it might be a custody issue and begin to look for the child's father. However, when the child ends up in the north of Sweden and the word "unwanted" scribbled on her forehead, police know they are looking for a mastermind child killer.

With excellent dialogue and psychological insight into the investigators, their thoughts and families, we observe their reaction when the investigation takes a new turn.
