Reviews of Black House (2001)

As soon as I started to read the book, I just knew that I wouldn't care much for it. The opening scene was stretched out so much, so many lines in an attempt to create an atmosphere that I never felt. These descriptive scenes were too much, albeit not that abundantly present in the book.
There were just too many pages spent and wasted on explaining and attempting to set the dark mood, not enough to just continue the story. Which in the end meant very little.
I might have expected too much, 'The Talisman' was a very succesful dark fairy tale of sorts. 'The Dark House' is just a bad attempt of something that tries to be horror/thriller, the ending just ruined the entire book (which wasn't even necessary anymore).
I can't give it more than 2/10, some scenes were well put and worth reading for that alone. (but those are few and far in between)

Black House started slow which is very unusual for a King novel. Otherwise it was very good with good characters, good plot and a good ending. The story follows in the worlds of The Talisman with most of the same characters about 25 years afterwards. Black House ties in with King's Dark Tower mythology like many of his books now. 9/10

You need not have read THE TALISMAN to enjoy this sequel....the last quarter is vintage King (and Straub, I'm not sure his isn't listed as a co-author), but the rest is a very interesting examination of the life of a man, and a small town which lives with a pall over it.
