Reviews of Duty Calls (2007)

Okay, this sort of book is never intended to Great Literature. Instead, it's meant to be a rollicking good read, and by-and-large it delivers.
Ciaphas Cain, Commissar to the 597th Vallhallan Imperial Guard Regiment, only wants a quiet life, where the life's easy and the women easier. Instead, he and his regiment get sent to the hottest spots in a war-torn galaxy in defence of the Human galaxy.
This is the fourth in an ongoing series, written from Cain's perspective as a biography, along with footnotes from his biographer giving a glimpse of the wider picture - Cain is definitely focused on himself! I don't play the Warhammer games, but I am an enthusiastic collector of the figures so I have some feel for the background and the book fits in quite splendidly.
If I have any complaints it is that the book isn't detailed enough in the action and though some of the scenes are rather gruesome, there is a sense that some punches were pulled (though in fairness it is aimed at a somewhat younger audience than me!).
