When one buys a Stephen King book, generally there are high expectations for it. However, Cujo is one of Stephen King’s weaker efforts. Although nowhere near as bad The Dark Half, it is still unsatisfying in many ways. The story begins with the introduction of a homicidal cop that killed many people before eventually disappearing, but King ends the paragraph by saying that like other monsters, this monster didn’t disappear forever which forces the user to believe that the homicidal cop will make a return. Yet the cop is hardly mentioned a couple of times during the entire book. INSTEAD the book is about a Saint Bernard that goes rabid. The book starts off in typical Stephen King fashion with details about characters and their various lives. The characters although well made, aren’t that special. Donna Trenton is the only standout character. The starting of the book is pretty slow; it takes a long time before the story actually gets underway. The biggest disappointment is the fact that the book fails to scare you despite being a horror novel. Even the parts where Cujo is totally out of his mind and killing left and right aren’t scary. A weak effort by an author who has written much better stories.

I love Stephen King, but I did NOT like this book. I only made it halfway through before I just had to stop. Maybe it got better in the end, but I wasn't willing to sit through it.
