Reviews of New Amsterdam (2007)

There are plenty of things to like about New Amsterdam. The alternate history setting is atmospheric, intriguing, and rife for exploration. The plotting of each little mystery is well conceived. The characters, including the supporting cast, are varied and well drawn.
For me the weaknesses were that the story stumbled a bit in drawing the complicated (and not terribly convincing) relationships between Sebastian and his court. And on some level the protagonist Garrett felt a bit too good to be true (in a middle-aged female escapist fantasy mode).
Of the six episodes, my favorite was the fourth, "Limerent." While the first three epidodes had been previously published as stand-alone short stories, this book reads more than a novel than a collection.
