Reviews of Carrie (1974)

a very fast read. it was ok, nothing special about it. i've seen the movie and to be honest.. i prefered the movie to the book! thats a funny thing to say but i really do. the book is really well written i give it that. but nothing in the book sticks out in my mind. so if you want to read a well written book with a not bad story then read carrie.

Extremely strong character development and strong dialogue mark all of King's work and Carrie is no exception. King is a wonderful weaver of tales. When I read this book while in my teens, I was bored with it and just didn't get it. Reading it again as an adult, I can better see all of the inner turmoil that the characters are facing. It's also interesting how he breaks up the narrative with exerpts from real sounding commission reports, news stories and post-event accounts of the events of prom night. Truly a well written story of the terrible things that adolescents do to one another and what might happen if the right person is pushed past her threshold of tolerance.

An interesting book. Probably King's most structurally interesting work, interweaving fictional newspaper stories with high school outcast Carrie's narrative. A very interesting portrait of a girl's experiences in high school. The "horror" parts of the novel actually distract from its qualities. I have seen it as regrettable that King, an author who has a very good grasp of human emotions and thought, has relied on this generic crutch. This is, in many ways, a template for what was to follow.

King's first published novel is a fun quick read, but not in the same league as almost everything else he's done. The plot is decent; nothing spectacular, but I've read worse. The writing is good, but lacking the droll wit of his other works. The characters are good, but again not as fully explored as in his other books. All in all, Carrie is a fun short little novel that isn't superb, but has a good ratio of fun:pages. 7/10
