Reviews of Main Chance, the (2005)
Review by nowirehangers (2008-03-24)
Having read "The Cell" and "The Vorpal Blade", I didn't have very high expectations for "The Main Chance". But it turned out to be quite enjoyable.
This time, Tweed and his team are contacted by Bella Main, the 84-year-old owner of the Main Chance bank. She has been approached by a villainous businessman who wants to buy her bank, so Bella Main wants Tweed to come work for her to protect her. Tweed politely refuses, and before long, Bella Main is murdered. Tweed, Paula and the rest of the team start investigating the Main and Chance families who live in a large mansion in "The Forest". Meanwhile, the villain and his assistant try to kill Tweed and more dead bodies turn up.
While "The Cell" had our protagonists running back and forth between different locations while nothing interesting happened, and "The Vorpal Blade" had such big continuity errors I was wondering if Colin Forbes was getting senile, "The Main Chance" kept the pace up and held my interest throughout. Still, it wasn't very suspenseful and the dialogue was sometimes awkward, but an enjoyable read nonetheless.
