Reviews of Assassin's Road, the (2000)
Lone Wolf and Cub chronicles the story of Ogami Ittō, the Shogun's executioner who was disgraced by false accusations from the Yagyu clan and has been forced to take the path of the assassin. Along with his three-year-old son, Daigoro, they seek revenge on the Yagyū clan and are known as "Lone Wolf and Cub".
This is one of the greatest manga series ever. Koike and Kojima have conjured a visual masterpiece- a journey that we share through 28 volumes. And what a journey it is! A powerful, epic samurai tale set in ancient Japan, Lone Wolf and Cub is a fine example of what comics ought to be.
The fact that Lone Wolf and Cub has spawned many adaptations- movies as well as tv shows- is testament to its appeal among the public. And it has influenced a whole generation of perople, especially in the East. The story is episodic and the style of Kojima's art has a strong cinematic feel. The art is also very powerful and lends a strong feeling of motion to the action scenes, which can be very graphic.
A must read for all comic lovers. IMO, Lone Wolf and Cub is a unique retelling that should not be missed.
