Reviews of Invisible Monsters (1999)

Review by slink (2003-03-09)
Hard to say whether this is my favorite novel by Palahniuk or not, certainly on a par with Survivors and Choke, but very differen from both, as both are from each other.
This has an almost Coupland feel to it. It was almost like Fight Club crossed with Miss Wyoming, featuring the shallow elitist world of beauty and modelling, with the kind of self awareness, and thoughtful, almost magic situations common to Coupland. Things that really mean something deep down.
Another superb novel from Palahniuk. probably less funny then Survivor or Choke (Choke being his funniest I'd say), but so thoughtful as to make up for it.

Palahniuk's first written and worst written book-- it is only deserving of a nine, rather than a ten. This was written shortly before Fight Club and it certainly shows it-- many of the same themes and the same general tones are used throughout the novel. It kind of drags on. . but it is well written, and the underlying messages of losing it all to find yourself is a powerful one. Well worth reading.
