Reviews of At Risk (2006)

Review by dmccormick (2009-03-09)
This book was huge disappointment, I have read many of the Kay Scarpetta books so I decided to read this one. It felt like I was reading an outline which someone accidentally published. There was nothing new to learn, no great description. As a result I have not read any of her books since, until the new 'Scarpetta', which I just finished. I would hope Patricia Cornwell would not ever repeat this again.

I have read every one of Patricia Cornwell's books. I loved "Book of the Dead" but "At Risk" was a great disappointment. It was as though someone besides Ms. Cornwell wrote it. I had to push my way through it, and hoped there would at least be a surprise at the end--there was none. Dull, uninteresting plot and characters. Please, bring back the Kay Scarpetta style!

I enjoyed the story line and the characters were great. I would love to see more books about these people. Patricia's books usually have a lot more descriptions, making it very easy to imagine the people and their surroundings. However this book is lacking her usual descriptions. It would almost qualify for a short story. Overall, not her best work.
