Reviews of Hard Way, the (2006)

Review by michael a draper (2010-06-04)
Once again, Reacher arrives at a destination and trouble seems to seek him out.
In this tenth episode of the Jack Reacher saga, Reacher is sitting at an outside cafe in New York. From his many years as a U.S. Marine Military Police officer, he's fully observant of his surroundings. He spots a man walking away from him, get into a Mercedes and drive away.
The next night, Reacher is back at the spot when a military looking man with a British accent asks if he noticed anyting the previous night. Reacher tells him about the man, adding that he only say the view from the man's back. Hearing this, the man requests Reacher to accompany him to see Edward Lane.
Lane lives at the Dakota House in New York and informs Reacher that his wife, Kate, and her daughter from a previous marriage, Jade, have been kidnapped. He tells Reacher that what he saw the previous night was the man with the ransome money leaving the pickup. Lane also informs Reacher that this also happened five years ago to his first wife, Anne. Anne was kidnapped and when Lane went to the FBI, the kidnappers killed Anne. That's why he doesn't want the police involved this time.
Even though Lane is accompanied by a group of former military men, it's obvious to Reacher that they lack investigative experience. Therefore, being a former cop and hero of the oppressed, he volunteers to help.
The investigation proceeds slowly as the kidnappers call and increase their demand. Later, Reacher is able to be on his own and he arranges to meet the FBI agent, Lauren Pauling, who was in charge of the case when Lane's wife, Anne, was killed.
Pauling still feels guilty about Anne's death. However, Reacher sees that he can trust her and so they work together to solve the case.
This is a fast moving, constantly suspenseful story. Reacher, as always, is one of the most courageous and resourceful characters in fiction.
The author uses Reacher as an example that although there may be evil all around, there is also good and good will win out.

WHAT A GOOD BOOK! Reacher is hired to track down a rich man's kidnapped wife and daughter. In an adventure that goes from NY to Great Britian and back, the methods Reacher uses to track down the kidnappers and bring the real bad men down is as entertaining as it gets.

Though Reacher does things the Hard Way in this book, its as easy a read as it gets. This one really shows just how BAD ASS Reacher is, ITS GREAT!
