Reviews of Rusalka (1989)

Rusalka has a dark tone that matches its time period. In a world where ghosts were real and malignant spirits lurked in every forest, wouldn't you be afraid? Russia is not the setting for much historical fantasy so I found this story enlightening. I did feel the story dragged a bit in the second half, with a bit too much wandering around in the woods but not quite enough resolution at the end. Overall a fantasy story well worth reading.

One of my fav books. Ever! I have read this one about 4 - 5 times and I'm sure that I will read it again and again. It is a wonderful book!
The book is set in old world Russia. The book evokes perfectly old time Russia. First the town where the main characters grow up and live. Then the countryside and the dark brooding woodlands where the main chunk of story takes place.
There is a cottage owned by a strange old man deep in the woods where the our 2 heroes, one a young boy and one a young man take refuge. The old man is strange and a little scary. Is he a wizard? Who is he? He fills them with strange tales and folktales. And... There is something out in the forest. Could a ghost? Something else? And what secret is the old man hiding?
Read and find out... This is a wonderful book that is filled with magic and folktales of old time Russia. Recommended!
