Reviews of Rising Sun (1992)

Review by nzilla (2004-08-03)
Rising Sun starts out quite good and gets progressively worse. While racist is probably too harsh a word, this book is definitely overly paranoid and very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very xenophobic. The first half is actually quite good and does a fairly decent job of being fair about the issues of the time, but as the book goes on it just turns into one big Japan-bashing rant. The thriller/mystery elements of the book also start out good, but get progressively more clichéd. It's funny to look back and see how much things changed just a few years after this book came out, and to laugh at how ludicrous the book sounds now. Crichton seemed to be concerned about the practices of Japanese companies, but never mentioned the same things done by American ones; in a world where we have Microsoft, this is really laughable. Really only worth it for Crichton completists (well, and genuine racists). 3/10
