Reviews of Small Gods (1992)

Excelent book and my first taste of Pratchett's work. I was impressed with his style and ability to pull my into the story. The characters in this are deep and memorable each with hidden depths that are revealed through out the book. The premise is quite brilliant and the writting is very fluid. I did have a problem with the quick arc of the protagonist as he goes from bumbling follower to prophet in no time and seems to loose the inocence that made him so lovable. All in all a book well worth a read.

Terry goes on to touch the delicate problem of religion in this oh-so-daring novel. It makes sense to me that plenty of people out there would not like it at all, not only for the harsh and bitter cynicism, but also for the hilarious and extravagant "heathen" sensation behind every little scene. If you're looking for the meaning of life, you will not find it here. What you will find however, is a humorous touch on several aspects of religious conduct throughout this world, our own, projected onto the Disc, which is after all carried by four elephants in the back of a giant turtle. And of course, you get to accompany the Prophet while he is out there in the desert. Personally, I wouldn't miss the opportunity to do that once more.

Silly little book, can be a fun read and a distraction, but offers little in the way of
depth or insight or meaning.
