Reviews of Howl's Moving Castle (1986)

Review by ruby juwl (2007-03-22) Contains spoilers. View anyway.

If, like me, you're reading this book cause the movie based on it was intriguing, but missing a bit, you won't be disappointed by the full story. There are a few inconsistencies from the movie, but the book could easily be seen as a separate tale.

This book is a quick read, but that's because you'll be so engrossed in it that you won't be able to put it down. The book gets more into Sophie's sisters, and their relationships, but it also gives enough background to piece together the broken threads in the movie, such as why Howl mistakes his tutor as a guy. Plus, it gives a lot of backstory for Howl and the Witch of the Waste's relationship.

All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable book, immersing the reader in a world full of history, magic, and mystery.

This is one of my favorite books from my childhood. This has also been made into a very excelent anime movie by Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki. You can check out the movie information here at:

The movie is a bit different, but that is to be expected. I believe that the changes do not detract from the movie at all. Also, it is a Ghibli Studio film so you can expect great quality.
