Reviews of Modesty Blaise (1965)

In the first full length Modesty Blaise adventure, the newspaper strip had been running since 1963, O'Donnell set in stone all the elements that would make the Modesty Blaise series so memorable - the big villain, their gang, their ingenious criminal scheme in exotic places and the wonderful characters of Modesty Blaise and Willie Garvin who happen to cross their path, usually accidentally but sometimes at the behest of British Intelligence. The action scenes are often and intense, the humour genuine and relaxed, and the denouement is quite riveting. As a template for the rest of the series, this is damn near perfect.
