Reviews of Circus of Dr. Lao, the (1935)
Review by kirwar4face (2003-03-13)
One returns to this odd little book again and again. Though reviewers (such as myself) find it convenient to characterize the content with such labels as 'bawdy' , the mood of the novel is one of amused detachment, as if it had been written by one of the Taoist immortals. Nothing really happens in the novel, though things do; change would violate the timelessness in which myths and small Arizona towns exist.
