Reviews of Dark is Rising, the (1973)
Review by chickenwarrior (2007-04-04)
This is one of my all-time favourite fantasy books, and is a perfect representation the beautifully dark and rich (but still kid-friendly) writing Cooper is capable of. The way it deals with the concept of time is both subtle and striking. The characters are believable, and the imagery is incredibly vivid. The pace is strangely consistent, but the action sequences are gripping and the 'slow' scenes are wonderfully evocative of the athmosphere of winter, and the beauty of time. It's not at all necessary to read the other books in the series to enjoy this one (which is also the best), but it can't hurt!
