When the Dendarii fleet ship Ariel was ordered by Miles Naismith that they had a contract to hit the cloning facilities of House Bharaputa, the captain's so eager to take action that it (a Betan hermaphrodite) overlooks certain discrepancies. But it's not her boss but his clone brother and he soon has the ship and it's soldiers in trouble before Miles can pull them out.
When Miles tries a raid of his own, it goes tragically wrong.
In the ensuing chaos, Mark, his clone brother, finds a new family and Miles sees what it's like to be dead.
Although easily one of the darker books in the series, there is, as usual in Bujold's work, an undercurrent of humour through the book.
