Reviews of Undead and Unwed (2004)

Review by sTalking_Goat (2005-09-08)
It's been a long time since I've been truly embarrassed to have spent money on a book. It helps that I got the MM paperback and not a HC but not by much.

Undead and Unwed is a mess. I guess I expected it to be shallow and vapid on the surface, with some kind of deeper narrative or meaning or something. I kind of expected to discover another Buffy the Vampire Slayer and didn't. There are insterestingly executed parts of the books. I like for example how Betsy is completely unfazed and changed by becoming a vampire, and more concerned with recovering her shoes than all the possible ramifications, but I hate just about everything else. All of the other characters are completey one dimensional. MJD's attempts at humanizing them (eg Jessica's childhood abuse) mostly come off as cliched. The dialog has its moments but had me rolling my eyes a lot, and the storyverse doesn't some very deep or well thought out. There's nothing in this book that would bring me back to this series.
