Reviews of Player Piano (1952)

Review by billypilgrim (2008-02-27)
Player Piano was obviously written to be like the other books telling of the trials of a dystopian society. Not a very new topic but entertaining nonetheless. What sets Player Piano apart from the other books of this genre that came before it is, without a doubt, Kurt Vonnegut. His writing style is so captivating and makes the reader continue until the book is finished. Vonnegut can't be faulted. 8.2/10

Player Piano is similar in feel to Nineteen Eighty-Four, but not as well done. It's basically an us against the machines story (common from that era - it was published in 1952), to tell what value the human experience has. It's a little heavy-handed at times and very technologically anachronous. 7/10

This is not Vonnegut's greatest book, although the topic he addresses is as important as his other ones. However the story is in my opinion too bleak and earnest compared with his other works. It is lacking his irony and sarcasm with which he usually addresses his topics. Although there are some nice episodes in the novel it is not enough to match his other successes.

This is about the 5th or 6th Vonnegut book I've read and it is the least enjoyable. He has a point or two to make with the story but I found it a big slow & boring. If this was the 1st Vonnegut book I had ever read I wouldn't have bothered with any more. If you're a Vonnegut fan then go ahead and read it and check it off of your list.

Great book, has a similar feel as 1984 or Brave New World.
