Reviews of Thief of Always, the (1992)

Review by cthulhu99 (2007-02-25)
This is the first novel that I read that was written by Clive Barker. So far after reading several of his books, it is still my favorite. The plot is enough to keep you turning the pages. The thought of having Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas all in one day keeps your attention. Then suddenly the realization comes that there is a price to pay for such a fantasy. This is definitely worth your time to read. In fact after writing a review on it, I want to read it again.

Clive Barker is a good writer. Though I have never read one of his adult novels, as I have been urged not to, I really love his young adult/children novels. This is why The Thief of Always is good.
1) the story is quite different from anything I've ever read
2) Clive Barker uses good descriptory words that get you into the story
3) While it takes a few pages to get into the novel, for the rest of the story, you are completely intruiged, and sometimes creeped out.
