Reviews of Waiting for Gertrude (2003)

An interesting conceit! The dead of Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris are reborn into the bodies of cats! But sadly, Miss Toklas has been translated and Miss Stein has not. Oscar Wilde is madly in love with Jim Morrison (he had bad taste in men even when on two legs), and Proust is, well, Proust is as wordy as ever. LaFontaine gives tours of the cemetery in verse (I thought this the least successful part of the book), while Alice and Héloïse compete for the local catering business. Très amusant!
