Reviews of Timequake (1997)

Review by floridaishell (2008-06-17)
This book, is as described by the author himself, "a stew." A creative creative social commentary, with a mix of reality and fiction, and a pleasant return of the Vonnegut staple Kilgore Trout. It's true that many will find it difficult to discover a point or a plot within this novel, but that is frequently the case with Vonnegut novels, just continue, hold firm, and you will ultimately be rewarded unlike any writing of this era.

I found Timequake to be very entertaining. Vonnegut was his usual witty self, and the book is quite humorous in spots. Unfortunately, it gets a bit preachy when Vonnegut gets into his political opinions. He seems to talk down about those who might not see everything the same way he does, and it detracts from the fictional parts of the book, which are a much less haughty depiction of his worldview. Overall, it is solid and entertaining. Although, it is no Slaughter-house Five.

Timequake is a very disjointed mix of story and memoir. I didn't really see any point to this book, it just kind of rambled on and on (and on and on). Reading this book was like having a LONG sit-down "chat" with your great-uncle Fred. Cat's Cradle, in my opinion, was a MUCH better book (I have yet to read his others). 4/10
