Reviews of Golem's Eye, the (2004)

Review by kanjisheik (2007-06-28)
In The Golem's Eye, Nathaniel is now a rising star in the government, but he has two problems to deal with: first, he has to track down the Resistance- a small and persistent group of underground rebels threatening the stability of the government and, more importantly, find out who or what is behind a mysterious and destructive series of magical attacks now rocking London.

The question is- are the two things related? Nathaniel must once again summon the wily, shape-shifting djinni Bartimaeus to unravel the mystery. The unlikely team of the ambitious student magician and the cynical, wise-cracking djinni makes for a solid and involving page-turner.

In this outing, a new character is thrown into the mix - Kitty, a young leader of the Resistance - whom Nathaniel must find. And there's lots more: a dangerous, secretive mission to Prague, a deadly menace that the Resistance accidentally unleashes, and the cold, devious ambitions of an unseen enemy within London itself!

Bartemius is definitely one of the most interesting characters I've ever read, hands down! His anecdotes[and there are LOTS!] are extremely hilarious... Since the Golem's Eye is the book in between, it suffers a bit as there is no definite ending. We can sense that the villain who got away in the first and second books will have a final showdown with Nathaniel in the third part... So three cheers to Barty and Co! :~)

These books are quite good. The author has quite the talent for weaving plot and dialogue together perfectly. Nathaniel is one of the main characters and is the kind of character you like but would also like to knock the arrogance out of. While Bartimaeus steals the story. The book is told from the viewpoint of a few main characters which makes it a fun read.
