This, the second book of Davies' Deptford Trilogy, finds David Staunton, son of Boy Stauton, in Jungian analyis in Switzerland. Prompted by his father's peculiar death, and his own peculiar public reaction to it, Staunton, a succesful barrister, has put himself on trial in his imagination, and sentenced himself to psychiatric treatment.
We learn more of the characters we met in Fifth Business, Dunstan Ramsey, Magnus Eisengrim and others.
Although part of a trilogy, this book does not need to be read in order, but can stand on its own.
I have to say, though, that I did not find this book as compelling as others of Davies' that I have read.
