Reviews of Beast That Shouted Love at the Heart of the World, the (1969)

A mixed bag from Ellison. I had already read, and generally liked, five of the stories in this collection, but the other ten were new to me.

Of the stories that were new to me "Santa Clause vs. S.P.I.D.E.R.," without out a doubt the funniest Ellison story I've read to date, was my favorite.

At the other end of the spectrum was "Run for the Stars," a story about a drug addict who becomes an unwilling pawn in a plot to foil an alien invasion. This ranks as perhaps the worst Ellison story I've read to date, with plot holes you could drive a truck through, cardboard aliens my pre-k son could have conceived, and protagonist whose development is utterly, incomprehensibly unbelievable.

In the introduction Ellison comes off as arrogant and unlikable, but then that's never kept folks (including me) from buying his books.
