Reviews of V (1963)

V. is a difficult book. However, it does have its rewards. If one has the time and energy to juggle 150 characters coexisting in a nonlinear narrative, then it is a fine comic novel. If not, it is confusing and incoherent. My opinion of the book has wavered between these two poles, but overall I believe the book has more strengths than weaknesses. It seems very much a first novel, although far more ambitious than average. Pynchon went on to greater works (Lot 49, Gravity's Rainbow), but the themes and styles of those later works are here in embryonic form, and the book is interesting as an historical artifact as well.
