Reviews of Second Variety (1953)

Although set in a future that is no longer likely to occur, this is one of the most unpleasant futures I have ever read!
PKD was never what you might call positive but in this story of a planet destroyed by years of war, the machines developed by UN forces to save themselves from the invading Russians have largely overcome the programming that stopped them attacking those UN forces and in those automated factories new types of killer machines are coming off the production lines and its become impossible to tell a machine from a man!
Although better known for his reality twisted sf, this is all too grounded in an all too likely future as it appeared from the perspective of 1953
