Well, I am a Bujold fan, but this book is my absolute favorite. Clong spoke of a tear in your eye. I have this lump in my throat each time I reread Miles' monologue about his grandfather, towards the end (when you read the novella, you can't miss it, no point to make a spoiler now). Just thinking about it makes my throat contract. Just so strong!

This wonderful Hugo and Nebula winning novella is available free from www.baen.com/library . It is an early Miles story, set just after his graduation from the academy. The crippled Miles, disfigured from birth by a poison attack on his mother, is dispatched to investigate a case in the rural hinterlands, an area where newborns with health problems are frequenty victims of infanticide.
I highly recommmend this tragic story about prejudice, justice and obligation; by the end it will bring a tear to your eye.
