Reviews of Handmaid's Tale, the (1985)

Review by m3at (2003-11-30)
I hated, hated, hated this book. It was terrible. It was difficult to read (to be fair, this is because the book was written as a transcript of audio tapes--no, seriously--not because poor grammar, or anything like that), the story was a poor-at-best attempt to create a dystopia. The ending was a total let down. It felt thrown together. I've had people tell me that, "it's open ended to make you think." I'm sorry, but that's just bull. If she wasn't prepared to finish the story, she shouldn't have written the book. Skip this and read a real dystopia book: 1984. Or, if you're really desperate: Brave New World.
