Reviews of Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World (1985)

This is a very strange book, but in a good kind of way. It took me a few days of reading just a chapter at a time to get into the pacing. The chapters alternate between two very different worlds, but you can tell from the start that there's definitely a connection. Once I got used to that, I just couldn't put the book down, and finished it in just two more sessions. The pacing is similarly strange, but again it's not a bad thing. Reading this book is like analyzing a piece of abstract art: it's not supposed to make total sense, but you can still appreciate the way it is put together and how it works as a whole.

Other than the strangeness, I can't really complain about this book. The character development was good, as was the plot (if a bit absurd, but it works), as well as the dialogue. I was hoping for a somewhat different ending, but again it all fits into place.

I'd recommend this book to just about any avid reader.
