Reviews of Malafrena (1979)

Review by spiphany (2004-04-09)
For some reason this reminded me of Goethe’s “Werther” or Schiller’s “Kabale und Liebe”. I suppose that makes a certain amount of sense. It has many of the elements characteristic of romanticism (emphasis on emotion over rationalism, nature as an inspiring element, idealism, and the lonely figure of the artist), and it is set at approximately the same time period as these authors’ lives, so the atmosphere is similar. The style, which is allusive and descriptive (although some people might consider it slow and slightly ponderous) is appropriate to the story and quite evocative.
