Reviews of Crossroads of Twilight (2003)

Review by i121 (2005-12-04) Contains spoilers. View anyway.

What I found ridiculous about this book was the way half of it was devoted to catching up with the events that happened at the end of the last. And even that wasn't done to a satisfactory manor.
Saidin being cleansed is an incredibly huge deal yet we see barely any reference to it at all! I don't understand how the synopsis can say

"Meanwhile, Rand al'Thor, the Dragon Reborn, has cleansed the Dark One's taint from the male half of the True Source, and everything has changed."

when quite contrary to that absolutely nothing has changed, least of all the attitudes of Saidin users and people towards it.

I gave this book 5 out of 10 stars. The only reason why I didnt give it less was because of Mat. He was great in this book. The only part in which I enjoyed truth be told. Perrin was berable and there were only 2 chapters with Rand and one wasn't even in his POV. Over all I forced myself though most of this book, the females were annoying as ever. I would just find some spoilers and read the mat chapters and just skip this book.

A big disappointment. The story goes nowhere. If the next book is equally bad, I will stop reading Jordan.

This one appears to have brought all the various simultaneous time points of view up to approximately the same point in time. This is most notable in the passages with Mat about whom we were left hanging in the previous book. I would have to agree that this book was painfully slow in developing in many places. I mean, did we really need to have so many pages within Perrin's head? I spend most of those sections mentally screaming at him to come to the obvious conclusion. Then again, that could be construed as good character development.

There were clear bits of manoeuvering on the parts of many of the characters and it is clear there is some sort of set up going on. How close we are to the exploding point is hard to say though. It is clear that Rand has a plan but then he had a plan for cleansing the source for how many volumes? It is also clear that things are going wrong for Elayne vis-a-vis the seafolk. And we have the borderlanders. And things have gone wrong for Egwene. And the Black Tower is splitting. And so on. I wonder how he's going to avoid Deus Ex Machina to get everything sorted out.

If you are looking for action, I would suggest buying this book and keeping it until the next one is out before reading it.

I was never one of those people that believed Jordan was stringing us along like soap opera fans. Until I read this book. After Crossroads of Twilight, I was left to wonder... Is he only in it for the money?

I expected more from this book after the end of Winters Heart. We learned very little new information in this book, and the story is draaaaaaging. There was no climax or ending to this book, and I am looking forward to a book where the story advances by more than a few days. This book is the worst one in the series, so far.

You might as well just skip to the last hundred pages if you want any action. The rest of the book just drags on and rambles on about each character. Nowhere near the calibar of the other books in the series.

I found it to be a complete change of pace for this well received series. In "Crossroad" We have a building of suspense.
A calm before the storm of the fury of the Shadow. The main characters continue to mature and grow as they take on world leadership roles expected of them..

The Perrin POV was very close to the type of suspense we have come to expect from Stephen King.

After Winter's Heart I was sure that something awesome had to happen in this book. Every piece had been moved to the right place and all was setup for some interesting development.

I was wrong however. I'm very disappointed. The book is just one big setup for the next book. But I thought that way about Winter's Heart as well. So now I don't know. Still, Jordan should have had some more development in this book. Although it wasn't badly written, there wasn't much story to it, no magic.

I was expecting better from Jordan. I hope that the next book is a match for the shadow rising...
