Reviews of School for Sorcery, a (2002)

I have the suspicion this was spawned from the Harry Potter craze. It is written for a slightly older audience and is somewhat – well, not exactly darker, but less innocent than the Harry Potter books. It also rather fails in conviction. The course of events seem unthinking and chaotic (and rushed at times), and much of it is too exotic and otherworldly to identify with. As in _Chamber of Secrets_ the characters seem to stumble around without really knowing what they’re doing or even bothering to try to fathom clearly what’s happening before they take action. And even when they do try to understand, they seem to have little control over what happens. There are certain elements of the story which definitely have potential (the bit about “worlds are created out of dust and the tears of the gods” and the use of mirror magic) but they aren’t developed as well as they might be.
