Reviews of 3001: The Final Odyssey (1997)

Review by nzilla (2004-06-25)
The supposed final "Odyssey" book is definitely my favorite overall, though they're all quite good. As usual, the writing is clinical, yet still literate enough to maintain the reader's interest, much more so than in Clark's earlier works like Rendezvous With Rama. Clark uses his books, and this one especially, to show scientific possibilities and give social criticism. This is all quite interesting—and even fairly ballsy at times—in this one, and it is certainly why I like this book so much, but as usual with Clark, the actual conflict of the story seems rushed and insubstantial, only appearing at the very end and seeming to be largely unconnected with the rest of the book, though not with the overall mythos of the series. Definitely enjoyable and thought provoking, but be sure to read the other books in the series first. A warning though: the tone in each book in the series is a bit different, especially with this one; a lot of people seem to hate this one, though some people love it. I certainly liked it. 8/10
