Reviews of Arrows of the Queen (1987)
Review by spiphany (2003-11-01)
I read and enjoyed the first of the Chronicles of Valdemar (Queen's Own), mostly because I identified with the protagonist, Talia. But I was never interested enough to read more than a few of the other books in the series. Tamora Pierce's "Lioness Quartet", which reminded me a somewhat of the Valdemar books, is much better. On a purely technical level, Mercedes Lackey is an adequate, but not a great writer. On the first read it isn't so noticeable, but on rereadings (and after having been exposed to really high quality writing in English class) I found some of the places where the writing is poor to be rather distracting.
