Reviews of Musashi (1971)

Musashi is a semi-fictionalized history of the life and times of one of Japan's greatest swordsmen and samurai (it has been called the Gone With the Wind of Japan). Musashi lived around 1600 AD, and was renowned for developing a two sword fighting style. His Book of Five Rings has been very influential among samurai for his thoughts on spirituality, strategy, winning and of couse swordplay.
Musashi starts off as an insolent, wild boy. His goal of mastering the sword becomes a journey towards enlightenment. The novel provides a lot of insight into samurais and the "way of the sword", as well as showing what life and culture was like in early 17th century Japan. The book was very readable, and has lots of good action, suspense, romance and lessons for life.
