This is the 2nd novel I've read of the Jane Whitefield series. She is able and capable as a sleuth/guide, but lacks the quality a hard boiled guide needs to succeed at helping the good guys: The cold indifference towards the bad guys. It is just not believable that she would risk drowning or being shot at by diving back to save the woman who just tried to murder her in cold blood. In spite of that, the book is a good read.
