Reviews of Jennifer Murdley's Toad (1992)

Entering the adventures surrounding the Magic Shop is real magic even for adults. I actually bought the book because the Indonesian bookshops harly have anything available in English and I was desperate to read something that I could understand.
I bought therefore two books from the Magic Shop series, since they only had two, and started reading. Maybe it was the coverdesign by Neil Chapman that did it.
But on the other hand, maybe it was magic, maybe it was ment to be, just as it was ment to be that Jennifer entered the Magic Shop.
What I enjoyed so much was not only the detailed way the caracters come to live in this book, but especially the combination of adventure and humor.
I never read any Harry Potter book, simply cause I don't want to. I have seen the movies and they tell me enough. But I doubt Harry Potter can do what the toad did in this book, namely add a big dose of humor that make even adults secretly enjoy reading a book that is written for children.
My advise? Buy it for your children and let them read it alone. They will start enjoy reading without ever having to urge them to pick up a book.
And if you don't have any children? Well, still buy it. Some day you might give it away as a birthday present, or you might enjoy reading it so much that you will simply give it a place on your own bookshelves.
