This book sets the tone for the rest of the series by establishing the church as the evil establishment. I actually read this before reading The Lark and the Wren, but that lapse didn't hurt my enjoyment of this story at all. A lighthearted read for those who like gypsies and musicians and don't much like powerful organizations.
