Reviews of Dark Tower V: Wolves of the Calla, the (2003)

"First comes smiles, then lies. Last is gunfire."

One of this books three opening quotes. It pretty much describes it in a nutshell. Its all setup and sometimes slow. The action when it comes happens very quickly "Five minutes of blood and stupidity.", and doesn't compare to the first shootout in Tull, in 'The Gunslinger' or even the showdown at the tinny in 'Wizard and Glass'. A bit of a disapointment really.

I liked it anyway though. For all the misplaced modern and contemporary pop culture references (that I hope King will explain at some point), the homages to Kurosawa and spagetti westerns, even if they are a bit heavy handed at times, and that distracting self referencial final page twist, thats no doubt going to polarize long time fans (although I'm sure they knew it was coming, or something like it). Defintely not the series' best, but it gave gave plenty of meat for the next to chew on, and since we don't have to wait 10+ years for the next, I can let the failings of this one slide.
