Reviews of Mammoth Book of Comic Crime, the (2002)
Review by scs (2005-08-01)
This is, I'm sorry to say, not only one of the worst books I've ever read; it's one of the very few I've paid money for and then thrown in the trash. (Normally I'd give an unwanted book away, but I wouldn't want to subject anyone else to this one.)
It claims to be a collection of the best and the funniest, and the author list looks good, but almost none of the stories are actually funny, and most of them are just bad. It's as if the editors couldn't get permission to use these authors' best stories and so had to settle for their weakest, or maybe they commissioned these authors to contribute original stories but offered measly compensation, and got what they paid for.
The only story I truly enjoyed was "Bampot Central" by Christopher Brookmyre, but you can read that on Brookmyre's home page. I got a smile out of the first paragraph of "The Dettweiler Solution" by Lawrence Block, and I'd quote it here under fair use, if I still had the book. Other than that -- all garbage, no laughs, many grimaces. There are good collections out there, but this isn't one of them. Definitely avoid.
