Reviews of At the Back of the North Wind (1871)

Diamond is a little boy from a poor family who befriends the North Wind, which appears to him in the form of a beautiful maiden with a miles long length of hair. He travels upon her back, both delighted and shocked by her actions...she is a force of nature, at times calm and cooling, at other times destrucive and formidable. She is like all people...possessing both goodness and negatives as well.
This bittersweet fantasy is a timeless classic for young and old readers alike...an entirely original story told with vibrant characterizations and thoughtful situations...a must-read book that is sadly slipping into obscurity. Nine of ten stars.
