Reviews of Powers That Be (1993)

First, I need to say that this book is not science fiction. Sure, it's in the future and on a different planet - but that is not enough. It's fantasy in space, and statements like "not everything can be explained scientifically" are what makes it that. And, of course, the lack of any scientific descriptions doesn't help.
That said, even as a fantasy book, it's not very good. Whenever I think of how to describe it, the word 'cheesy' keeps bubbling up. At times it's like a silly harlequin romance. The characters aren't bad, but their world outlook is very limited and hard to believe. There are also some inconsistencies in the book that the authors don't seem to have even thought about, much less addressed.
Lastly, this book doesn't seem to have much point. The main character comes, a few minor events happen and, then a bigger event, and that's it, end of story.
I did not enjoy this book and I would not recommend it for anything other than something to put you to sleep at night.

I really enjoyed the setting of this book; based loosely on reality, the surrounding environment and community is powerful and well shown. The characters are interesting and believable, and the premise of the book works well. Unfortunately, the resolution is just a little far fetched and fantastic for my taste. However, it's still worth the read. You'll enjoy every minute you spend getting there, just beware that at the end you may find you did not enjoy where you got.
