Known best for his "Divine Comedy," describing the author's allegorical trip into the afterlife, and more specifically "The Inferno," the first part of the "Comedy," which details Alighieri's time in the underworld. Intensely descriptive and condemning, especially regarding the punishments Dante assigns to the underworld's denizens (for example, being submerged in boiling pitch). The author encounters many familiar characters on his trip, including the Greek poet Homer, and Cassius and Brutus, the murderers of Julius Caesar. Since the book has been translated from Italian, it is rather difficult to read, but worth the effort. The only real caveat is that many of the characters in the book are Italian officials that the average Joe probably hasn't heard of.

Dante Alighieri wrote Dantes Inferno During the middle ages. a classic, with many good points, yet extremely hard to read, Inferno is... well, for scholars or people interested in religious texts.
