REH was, in my opinion, the greatest story-teller of fantastic fiction the world has ever seen. He might not have been the most artistic or elegant, but for sheer no-holds-barred readability, no one comes close. While his creation Conan the Barbarian overshadows everything else nowadays, in terms of public knowledge at least, REH created several other heroes equal, if not better, than his most famous creation: Solomon Kane and Kull of Atlantis to name but two. His output in the twelve years he wrote professionally for the pulp magazines of the day is truly astonishing, not just in terms of quantity, but the sheer range of subject matter. Apart from the material now dubbed 'sword and sorcery' he produced historical and contemporary adventures by the score, westerns, boxing and detective tales, even an interplanetary short novel - and all of it is worth reading. And thanks to the sterling efforts of Glenn Lord, amongst others, the vast majority of his work can now be enjoyed, even poetry, letters, fragments and assorted miscellanea; there's never been a better time to get caught up in the swirling bravado of Howard's tales - what are you waiting for!
