Tolkien can be considered one of the "Greats". His story telling brings forth our imaginations and lets us escape our world for a little while.

Tolkien, to me, is the greatest author of all time. He spawned a complete genre, fantasy, and overshadowed it at the same time, because no fantasy world that followed has the depth and richness of Tolkien's. He is also a very literary and meticulous writer, who had the courage to work within the unpopulour genre of the saga.

Simply, in a word, overrated.

For world building Tolkien is a master. As a writer Tolkien is not very good. It's been said that he is at least original and started the whole fantasy story off. This is not even true as there was several notable authors that got their at the same time or before him. Those other books are in shorter and better. The trouble with Tolkien is he is so long winded. You don't need a page and a half to describe how you drink a glass of water. The plot is far too padded out and he is far too concerned with making up a history, culture and language.

Having said that, there are many people that enjoy his works. I recommend that you hire something out of his from the library in place of buying. If you are not put off by his writing style then you can buy. He is famous for Lord of the Rings but the Hobbit is shorter and a far better story in my eyes.

The Hobbit is still a book I can pick up at any time, any place, any circumstance and just read. There is a certain comfort reading his prose.

This truly is the best author ever. He understood certain themes and how to portray them best in a huge set of tales in a place called Middle Earth.

Writing a comment here is nearly worthless due to the fact that if opinions are already so well formed and across the board on Tolkien. Mine is that while his works were okay, and probably revolutionary when released, they pale in comparrison to modern fantasy. The stories weren't as deep, believable or well written as many things that have come out afterwards.

Overrated, but pretty good. The Hobbit is far superior to The Lord of the Rings in every respect-- in my opinion, quite possibly the greatest fantasy story ever written. Not that that is saying much. Tolkien does not focus much on developing characters; rather, he wishes to show off his world. He achieves this goal well.
